Original Text WHEREAS, The Southeast Asian Student Coalition is an organization dedicated to the advancement and unity of the Southeast Asian community; and

WHEREAS, The SASC Summer Institute brings low income and underserved high school students from all across the United States to come to UC Berkeley for a week of workshops, activities, and personal development; and

WHEREAS, SASC-SI promotes unity, cultural and political awareness among Southeast Asian youth in their pursuit of higher education; and

WHEREAS, The success of SASC-SI can be seen in the numerous students inspired to be active in their communities and pursue higher education, as well as the several students who have attended UC Berkeley after their experiences at SASC-SI.

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, The ASUC Senate allocates $1500 dollars from the ASUC contingency fund to the Southeast Asian Student Coalition ?Summer Institute.

THEREFORE, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that SASC-SI is an ASUC sponsored event.

Mentor Training/ Curriculum Development $820.00

Mentors and volunteers must undergo training before the institute in order be prepared to help facilitate and run workshops, coordinate the youth and serve as a resource and network for the youth throughout the week. The workshops will go over policies in working with youths, help the mentors and volunteers understand the full extent of the curriculums and brainstorm various methodologies in presenting and addressing the Southeast Asian issues pertaining to the importance of higher education for Southeast Asian youths.

Breakfast: 30 people x $2.00/each x 2 days = $120.00
Lunch: 30 people x $4.00/each x 2 days = $240.00

The Summer Institute attempts to bring together a diverse group of students mainly from the Bay Area and Central Valley in order to build community and obtain a wide array of opinions and personal experiences. Outreaching to various high schools takes time and efforts, and we hope to cover the costs of transportation for those involved in outreaching so it will not be a barrier to reaching a diverse group of students.

Rental vans will be used to pick up the students from their hometown to UC Berkeley and back, as well as for transporting them throughout the Bay Area for educational curriculum and events.
Mini-vans: 7 vans x $120/each x 5 days = $4200.00
Gas: 7 vans x $30/day x 5 days = $1050.00

Housing $6120.00

In order for students to gain the full college experience and build a stronger community, students will stay in dormitory housing for all nights of their stay at UC Berkeley

Dorms: $34/bed x 4 nights x 45 students and mentors = $6120.00

Parking $490.00

Parking is important when inviting guest speakers, family, community members and teachers to attend and contribute to the program and curriculum of the Summer Institute.

Mini-van parking: 7 vans x $7/day (on campus) x 5 days = $245.00
Parents and community members: 25 passes x $7/day = $175.00
Guest speakers: 10 passes x $7/day = $70.00
Food $2500.00

The food calculation is based on the cost of food from the dormitory (which is not included in housing) as well as grocery-prepared food.

Community Banquet $1300.00

The community banquet will include caterers from the community, who will prepare traditional Southeast Asian cuisine for the event (up to 200 people will attend this event). The community banquet will be a chance for the community to see what the youth have gained and accomplished from being a part of the Summer Institute through various performances and works put together by the participating youths.

The orientation equipments will be used on the first day of the event to introduce the students to the program and this will be done in on of the larger auditoriums with a few opening performances. The classroom equipment is used primarily for workshop curriculum such as slide shows and videos pertaining to the Southeast Asian history and culture.

Classes (overhead, a/v): $25.00/day x 3 days = $75.00
Classes (video player, TV): $10.00/day x 2 days = $20.00

T-Shirts $500.00

T-shirts will be given to student participants, community members, teachers, mentors, volunteers, program supporters and donors involved in the Summer Institute.

T-shirt designs and prints: $5.00 x 100 = $500.00

Curriculum/ Educational Funds $2000.00

Guest speakers are key to the event in bringing outside knowledge and different viewpoints to the Summer Institute. They are often members from the Southeast Asian American community, and they provide a source of inspiration for the youth. Moreover, they serve as role models for many of the youth who are born and raised in areas that lack an Asian American presence in media, entertainment, and politics. All of them are fairly honored with an equal amount of $200.00 each, which will go for the travel fees and time involved in the event.
