ASUC prepares for the new incoming class of 2014 with Caltopia, Calapalooza, and a Pillowfight
The Associated Students of the University of California (ASUC), is preparing a variety of activities and events in August to welcome students to the University of California, Berkeley. These events will be used to raise awareness about the programs and resources the ASUC offers and providing students an opportunity to get involved on campus.
The ASUC is creating a new "ASUC World" at Caltopia, which will be a collaboration of several ASUC departments, including the student government, Auxiliary, Art Studio, and Lecture Notes. According to ASUC Marketing Assistant Brooke Montgomery, " These two days are paramount for the ASUC to explain all of its services and opportunities to Cal students and the public." Caltopia is an annual event known as the " the largest experiential college lifestyle festival in the nation," and is popular for its free admission and abundance of giveaways from sponsors and exhibitors. This year, Caltopia will be held on August 22-23, from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. at the Recreational Sports Facility (RSF).
ASUC is also expanding its presence at Calapalooza, and is anticipating a strong turnout at this event. The ASUC Student Government will feature several offices and programs, including the Academic Affairs Office, External Affairs Office, Office of the President, Student Advocate's Office, Executive Office, and Innovative Design. In addition, the ASUC Auxiliary will host a small commercial area in Lower Sproul featuring various vendors and sponsors. Calapalooza is an annual student organization fair, which showcases the various student groups on campus and gives them an opportunity to recruit talented students as new members. It will be held on August 26, 5:30 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. on both Lower Sproul Plaza and Upper Sproul Plaza.
The ASUC External Affairs Office will be hosting more lighthearted entertainment in the form of a pillowfight to be held on August 25, from 8:00 p.m. - 11:00 p.m. on Upper Sproul. External Affairs Vice President Ricardo Gomez states, "The pillow fight is something untraditional, but a fun way to start off the year. It's a good way for students to meet new people without ever having to say a word."
There are many opportunities for incoming freshman, new transfer students, and current students to be involved in the ASUC. The internship application has been released and the Executive Offices and Senate are currently accepting interns on a rolling basis. Students from all majors and backgrounds may apply. We also feature other opportunities. To join the ASUC, please visit http://www.asuc.org and click on "Get Involved."
